Public Rights of Way Improvements

The Marl Pits bridleway has been refurbished , improving a well-used walking and riding route with sustainable drainage and surface upgrades to make it safer, more accessible and more resilient

The popular bridleway at Marl Pits Leisure Centre has been refurbished thanks to investment from the Pride in Place programme, delivered in partnership with Rossendale Borough Council, The Forest of Rossendale Bridleways Association (FORBA) and other funding partners.

The well-used route, enjoyed by walkers, horse riders and other visitors, has been restored using natural materials and improved drainage to help prevent erosion and protect the path for years to come. The project was delivered by local contractor Terra Firma and was supported by additional funding from the Lancashire Environmental Fund and the British Horse Society.

Improving walking routes and bridleways was identified as a priority by local residents through Pride in Place engagement, with many people calling for safer, better-maintained outdoor spaces. This project is a direct response to that feedback and forms part of the ambitions set out in the Our Towns Plan.

By investing in practical improvements like this, the Pride in Place programme is helping to create better outdoor spaces that encourage people to enjoy Rossendale’s countryside, support active travel and make local routes more accessible and resilient for everyone.
