A new project is being developed to improve access through the Staghills Estate in Newchurch, creating safer, greener and more welcoming walking routes for residents and visitors.
Working alongside Rossendale Borough Council and Newchurch Village Community Association, the project will focus on improving two important walking routes, including the well-used footpath linking the Staghills Estate with The Heys.

The project will deliver a range of improvements to the routes and surrounding areas, including:
The improvements are designed to make the routes easier and safer to use, while also creating greener, more attractive spaces and supporting local biodiversity.

Working with the community
Community involvement is an important part of the project. Local residents, schools and young people will have opportunities to get involved through planting sessions, creative art workshops and other activities.
Residents have also been invited to share their views on the proposals. Feedback will help the project team understand local priorities and ensure the final plans reflect the needs of the people who use these routes and spaces every day.

Funding
The project is being funded through the Pride in Place Fund, which supports investment in local neighbourhoods to create safer, greener and more connected places.
The project is also supported by the Lancashire Environmental Fund.
Work is expected to begin in October 2026, with further information about the project and opportunities for the community to get involved being shared as the work progresses.
